"The water level's rising! The water level's rising!
The animals, the elephants, the polar bears are dying!"
(Kate Tempest, Europe is Lost)
The sea, water, fluidity; many angles can be taken to talk about the sea. Writers, musicians, painters, filmmakers; its mysterious, mystical, inspirational character has (a)mused many, while its devastating and destructive character has affected many. We live by and for water, we fight against it and we can't exist without it. We are drawn to it, and it lures us in, spits us out. We reside by it, gaze for hours on end to its horizon, listen to its endless roaring echoing in conch shells.
Author Lucia Dove will discuss (in English) her latest project, a research on the effects of the Watersnoodramp 1953 on both Dutch and English coastal lines. A poetic interpretation of water, geography, landscape, community and mankind.
Illustrator Jan de Boer, who has illustrated bookcovers for over 35 years, will give you a peek into his archive, looking at bookcovers that feature the sea/water. His talk (in Dutch) will give you interesting insights that will bring you to the edge's of your seats! He will discuss symbolism, cliches, and why so many people are drawn to the imagery of The Sea.
A third guest will be announced shortly.
